Wide Recievers/Tight Ends

  • Not like last year…..In 2007 we passed efficiently, not so much effectively but very efficiently. We dumped it outside and over the middle to the likes of Reynaud, Slaton, Sanders and Hogan. If it were not for their amazing playmaking ability we likely would have had an awe inspiring 176 completions for about 500 yards. In 2008, I believe we will try to use the passing game effectively and not just efficiently. One area I hope we continue to excel at is the perimeter and downfield blocking by our receivers that we have become known for.

  • Personnel…..In order to pass effectively in ’08 we will need many players to step up in every sense of the word. Our best hopes at the receiver position lie with predominantly slot receivers like Jock Sanders, Brandon Hogan, and Dorrell Jalloh all of which are more than capable of making plays but of the three only Jalloh has significant experience catching the ball 15+ yards downfield.  Then there are the outside receivers where you will likely see Jalloh due to his aforementioned experience along with Tito Gonzales, Wes Lyons and possibly a host of fresh faces. Of the known names I could see Tito becoming a legitimate deep play threat and Wes Lyons becoming a viable intermediate and red zone option. Some new names I will be watching for include J.D Woods, Alric Arnett and yes possibly Coley White (if we don’t leave him at QB).

The new scheme….While I still expect Mullen to use the pass to spread the field horizontally I believe we will see much more balance in regards to the play calling of intermediate and deep passing plays. With the previously stated lack of a true deep threat and an under-experienced receiving corps. in general it is here where I hope we are able to realize the insight and innovation that Mullen brings to the table. It will be imperative Mullen uses motion, effective play calling, and the threat of Pat’s legs to create the space and separation that otherwise might not be there. In related news don’t be surprised to learn we have a tight end this season as well.

  • No Owen…..I am a bit cautious to label fullback a weakness. There is clearly uncertainty at the position this year and while no one will be able to fill the hole left by legendary Owen Schmitt it seems that we always have some capable player at this spot. I expect that the player who does step in to fill this role whether it be tough Sam Morrone, Max Anderson, Thor Merrow or Lazear will be plenty capable of creating the necessary running lanes.
